CLAYTON, NC, July 14, 2010 – Jobs in Clayton, NC are available – there’s no doubt about that. But, finding those jobs often involves wading through big-name websites that often make job-seekers jump through hoops like registration, resume uploads, divulging personal information and more.

Enter Jason Pedley and his locally-owned Clayton Jobs website: ClaytonNCjobs.com. Pedley takes jobs from all over the U.S. and filters them down to the Clayton area. There’s no need to register, no need to upload a resume, no fees, and no other hoops to jump through.

In fact, the Clayton job search site uses “Search. Find. Apply.” as its motto to promote its simplicity and ease of use.

“There needs to be a local presence when it comes to local, online job boards in Clayton,” said Pedley. “Big-name, national job sites don’t care about Clayton. They don’t buy groceries at local businesses or attend local events. They’re about making as much money as possible at whatever cost.

ClaytonNCjobs.com is part of the ZuluJobs.com network of job sites that cover every state and is also owned by Pedley. But, because Pedley has a Clayton address, he felt compelled to offer local residents the opportunity to search for local jobs on a local site.

Open jobs on ClaytonNCjobs.com come from Simply Hired, one of the leading job websites in the world. Local companies are also able to post jobs to the site for an affordable price and have them published to the entire Simply Hired network.

On May 24, 2010, North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue made a quick trip on company taxpayer time to visit reverend Billy Graham at his home in Montreat, NC for a little prayer and advice on how to lead the state during a recession.

According to official accounts a press release from the Governor’s office, the two spent time in Graham’s living room discussing the economy and the challenges of governing the state during difficult economic times. Apparently they also discussed how a prayer would solve all of our economic woes, as the Governor proceeded asked Graham about his plans for another crusade before the two prayed together for North Carolina’s recovery from the recession.

Not wanting the Governor to feel that her trip was a total waste of time, Graham posed for one picture and then brought out the big guns – an extra-special super-duper prayer that Governor Perdue would receive guidance (the source of the guidance wasn’t mentioned in the press release) as she works to lead North Carolina through these turbulent times.

Also, no timeline for the prayer’s fruition was noted. Only Governor Perdue and Graham knows when the recession will be over.

“For many years, Billy Graham has been our nation’s spiritual leader. North Carolina is lucky to call him own of our own,” said Perdue.

She followed up with “I’m thankful for our time together and his words of support. I also want to thank Rev. Graham for his prayers for North Carolina’s swift economic recovery.”

But if you’re also like me, you probably have a pile of documents that you need shredded and don’t have the time (or a shredder) to do it.

I’ve got a banker’s box full of this kind of paperwork just waiting to be shred – 4 pages MAX – at a time in my little office shredder.

I really don’t feel like spending my day feeding paper to a shredder that overheats every 15 minutes and takes 15 minutes to cool down, so the pile WAS going to grow, until I saw the following online:

With the nation’s unemployment rate hovering around 9.7% for the first half of 2010, job hunting could be called the new national pastime. While some signs of an economic rebound have appeared already in North Carolina, significant job growth has NOT been among them. If you’re one of the thousands looking for jobs in North Carolina, you’ll need to get creative to get hired.

The new e-book from author Susan Greene, “Job Hunting in a Tough Economy, Kick-Ass Strategies to Get the Job You Want and the Salary You Deserve,” offers current, practical, job search advice packed into 257 meaty pages. Chapters give detailed, how-to information on resumes, cover letters, interviews and negotiating salary.

But if you ask me, the book provides the most value in its creative strategies that are designed to help job seekers find unadvertised positions and get noticed when the competition is stiff.

“These are original ideas proven to work but known by few,” explained author Susan Greene. “They take finding and applying for a job to the next level, from ordinary to awesome, so that the job seeker finds quality employment more quickly.”

The “Kick-Ass Strategies,” as they’re called, are presented in the form of case studies. “They’re true-life examples that job seekers can replicate and modify to fit their individual situation,” said Greene.

Greene is also the co-author of “The Ultimate Job Hunter’s Guidebook,” a widely-used college textbook on the subject of job hunting aimed primarily at students looking for their first career job. “Job Hunting in a Tough Economy” targets professionals who have some experience in their field.

Taking advantage of its electronic form, “Job Hunting in a Tough Economy” includes many links to online resources such as instructional videos, career blogs and websites with job listings.

Also included are many sample resumes and cover letters that readers can use as templates in creating their own job search tools. Add to that many inspirational tips and exercises designed to motivate the job seeker.

“Job Hunting in a Tough Economy” is all about taking action,” explained author Susan Greene. “No more feeling sorry for yourself. And no more reliving the moments when you were laid off, fired, quit or were in school. The process of job hunting is more marathon than sprint. Diligence in pursuing your goal is the only way to get to the finish line. The key to getting your career on track is simply to keep moving forward.”

“Job Hunting in a Touch Economy” is available as an immediate download, and it comes with 15 additional e-books and e-reports as free bonuses. According to Greene, each of these products is a virtual mini-course on how to achieve career, financial and personal success. “It’s a wealth of information in one value-priced package,” she said.

NOTE: While I admit, I am an affiliate for Susan’s book, two things are true: I know Susan, and I’ve read this book. Therefore, I can honestly say that Susan’s book WILL make a difference in your job search.

…and it has very little to do with health care reform.

Did you read the entire Health Care Reform Bill? It sounds like Bob Etheridge didn’t either.

If he had, he might have taken a stand for small businesses in his district (like mine) who have enough tax paperwork to deal with as it is – without this newly-minted waste of my precious time that he so proudly gave his “honorable” vote in support of.

You seen, hidden deep within those 2,409 pages of your elected government’s newly-touted bill, there are a few lines that will

Will Congressman Bob Etheridge fix the part of the Healthcare Reform Bill (he voted for it) that burdens small businesses?

make any small business owner cringe.

It’s the part that says (roughly) starting in 2012, ALL companies must issue 1099 tax forms to corporations from which they buy more than $600 worth of goods and services from in a tax year.

This used to apply only to contract workers and their services. Which is fine – I’m a freelance website copywriter and I get a ton of these 1099 things every year. But now this rule has been expanded to cover goods as well.

So, let’s take a good look at this…do you buy $600 worth of ink/toner from Staples? You’ll need to ask them for their Tax ID number so you can send them IRS form 1099. You’ll need to know what address to send that form to as well.

Did you buy a computer from Dell that was over $600 – same deal.

$600 worth of Wendy’s (the $600 is aggregated over the year, so it’s possible) – Get their Tax ID number, too.

$600 worth of gas from one (or more) companies? Hotels? Entertainment? Software? Paper? Tires? You get the idea…

Let’s say you buy $600 worth of branded material (business cards, letterhead, etc) from a person who is a sole proprietor. You need to send them a 1099, but they don’t have a Tax ID number – they have a Social Security Number.

And that’s where it gets even more interesting. For as much as we want to protect things like SSNs this section of the Health Care Reform Bill seems to leave a gaping hole in our hope of this kind of privacy. Many freelancers (me included) and other businesses are sole proprietors. Asking them for their SSN is a dangerous proposition.

If I wanted to obtain a SSN, all I’d need to do is buy $600 over the course of a year from a sole proprietor to get their SSN and a few other details like their address, and phone number.

Concerns over privacy and the fact that this adds up to a waste of my precious time makes this part of the bill, and quite frankly those who supported it, oppressive to small businesses.

I invite Congressman Etheridge to explain why he didn’t fight for the small business owners in his district and act to remove this part of the bill.

As for what’s being done about this new, nation-wide small business burden, you can (gulp) thank a Republican for introducing legislation that would remove this ghastly part of Obama Care.

Congressman Dan Lungren (R-CA) introduced the bill and says:

Large corporations have whole divisions to handle such transaction paperwork but for a small business, which doesn’t have the manpower, this is yet another brick on their back. Everyone agrees that small businesses are job creators and the engine which drives the American economy. I am dumfounded that this Administration is doing all it can to make it more difficult for businesses to succeed rather than doing all it can to help them grow.

We should be working on reining in the cost of health care, not imposing a new government mandate to squeeze every drop of revenue out of small business.

Source of the above quotes.

So what now, Congressman Etheridge? Maybe the intent of those few paragraphs of the healthcare bill were OK with you? Maybe you felt it was a small price to pay?

Too late, the word’s out. Small businesses are upset and my businesses what you to support the repeal of this part of the bill.

Will you fight to repeal this burdening piece of “Health Care Reform?” Or will you leave it as part of your legacy while small businesses struggle even further into the perils of this misguided fine-print of “Hope and Change?”

This is the opinion of Jason Pedley

Jason Pedley is a freelance website copywriter and blogger living in Clayton, North Carolina.

You know Strawbridge Studios, right? They come to Johnston County Schools and take pics of your kids….then you get the pics and only pay for the ones you want.

Sweet deal. Usually they do decent work. For a racket school fundraiser.

Unless it’s this week, and you’re like me – wondering why for some reason Strawbridge Studios wanted their money up-front, two days before “Cap and Gown” photos for my kid’s kindergarten class.

Notice I said “Cap AND Gown” meaning a cap…and a gown and “up-front” meaning I’ve paid for something I haven’t yet seen.

So when my son comes home and I ask him how cap and gown photos went, and he told that he “didn’t wear a cap,*” I began to get agitated.

Here’s some more of the story:

Me: “Did anyone wear a cap.”

Son: “Yes. Noah.”

Me: “Anyone else?”

Son: “No.”

Me: “Why did Noah get to wear the cap?”

Son: “He asked for it.”

Me: “How did he know to ask?”

Son: “I wish I knew.”

Me: “Me too.”

*My son has been known to be wrong from time-to-time.

So we’ll see in a few weeks if the cap and gown pics I paid for up-front are really all-inclusive. Until then, maybe you want some professional photos taken with a Johnston County photographer:
