If you’ve been down Booker Dairy Road in Smithfield, NC anytime in the past few months, you’ve probably noticed that there’s something big being built thanks to all the construction equipment. That’s the SRAC - the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. So, maybe you’re thinking “great, just another gym with a pool - big deal.” Well, it actually IS a big deal because there’s really nothing else like this in the area or in Johnston County. Take a look at what this center offers:
- An eight-lane competition pool
- Fitness room

- Strength training room
- Group fitness/aerobics room
- Indoor walking track
- Two racquetball courts
- A double-gym
- Splash pad
- Multipurpose rooms
- Concession area
- Banquet room
- Locker rooms
- Sitter service
- A place for birthday parties, crafts, personal training, camps, aquatics programs, senior activities and more…
And this is all in one place. As you can see, it’s WAY more than “just a gym.”
I told you it was important. The center is scheduled to open in January, 2009 and enrollment starts on September 8th. But don’t expect to be member #1 or member #2 because if you real the Smithfield Herald,
you’ll know that the SRAC held a tagline contest that encouraged the public to submit taglines for the center’s brochures and other marketing material. The winner and runner-up from that contest are now currently members #1 and #2.
If you’re looking for a place in Smithfield to get in shape that offers more than “just a gym,” the SRAC is for you. There are affordable membership rates and plenty of amenities to make it worth your while. Enrollment starts September 8th, 2008, and for a limited time there is NO ENROLLMENT FEE. Also, the first 100 people to enroll in an annual contract get one free month.
Learn more about the SRAC through its blog. You can see construction photos, get answers to questions, contact info and more.
Oh, and the winning tagline entry: “The benefits are endless…”

If you want to know if there are any power outages in Progress Energy’s services areas, you can visit the company’s outage map. You can even report a problem or an outage…provided you’re somewhere you have power.
It’s a bit of a painful irony, but still a good tool. And a great mashup, too. Way to go PE!
As I write this:
Active Outages: 14
Affected Customers: 312
Last Updated: Jul 17, 2008 1:35 PM

Info is update on Progress Energy’s site every 15 minutes provided they have power, too.
Low electricity bills - just one more reason to move to Johnston County. My last bill in Connecticut was $170 for a 892 square-foot house. Here…it usually between half and two-thirds of that - and my house in NC is more than twice as big.

…that Johnston County really is a great place to live.
I just happen to be a very demanding person when it comes to government. As a taxpayer in Johnston County, it’s up to me to voice my concerns about how the elected officials here operate. If I see something that doesn’t make sense, I blog about it so you’ll know what I think and maybe you’ll form the same opinion…or, maybe you won’t - I don’t really care.
Point is, that when you pay your taxes, and elect officials, you should expect them to act with a certain amount of respect for not only the tax money you send to pay their salaries, but also the money you spend on the services they offer - like the landfill, water, etc.
If you don’t speak up, nothing will change.

Dear Relocate Clayton:
I just moved into a new subdivision in Johsnton County. I’ve been told that at some point, the roads will be turned over to the state to be maintained. What does this mean?
Answer: Until responsibility for road maintenance is turned over to the town of Clayton, or the NC DOT, the developer(s) or owners of property in the subdivision are responsible for road maintenance. If a developer becomes insolvent, dissolves or dies, the owners alone will have to bear the cost unless a government agency takes over. Keep in mind there is never a guarantee that NC DOT or the town you live in will take control, and most often, when a developer is removed from the equation, it’s up to the owners to take over.
Hope that helps.

It’s no fun….being an illegal alien….na na na na na it’s a-no fun….
And it’s some serious talk if you ask me. Truth is, illegals are killing our citizens.
Hayhurst for America seems to agree.
If Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina want to tackle this problem, now is the time. But let’s be honest, illegals aren’t the only ones drinking and driving are they? This isn’t just a problem that’s limited to Johnston County. It’s a national issue and national power needs to be put in the hands of local governments to tackle this issue.
