If you’ve been down Booker Dairy Road in Smithfield, NC anytime in the past few months, you’ve probably noticed that there’s something big being built thanks to all the construction equipment. That’s the SRAC - the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. So, maybe you’re thinking “great, just another gym with a pool - big deal.” Well, it actually IS a big deal because there’s really nothing else like this in the area or in Johnston County. Take a look at what this center offers:
- An eight-lane competition pool
- Fitness room

- Strength training room
- Group fitness/aerobics room
- Indoor walking track
- Two racquetball courts
- A double-gym
- Splash pad
- Multipurpose rooms
- Concession area
- Banquet room
- Locker rooms
- Sitter service
- A place for birthday parties, crafts, personal training, camps, aquatics programs, senior activities and more…
And this is all in one place. As you can see, it’s WAY more than “just a gym.”
I told you it was important. The center is scheduled to open in January, 2009 and enrollment starts on September 8th. But don’t expect to be member #1 or member #2 because if you real the Smithfield Herald,
you’ll know that the SRAC held a tagline contest that encouraged the public to submit taglines for the center’s brochures and other marketing material. The winner and runner-up from that contest are now currently members #1 and #2.
If you’re looking for a place in Smithfield to get in shape that offers more than “just a gym,” the SRAC is for you. There are affordable membership rates and plenty of amenities to make it worth your while. Enrollment starts September 8th, 2008, and for a limited time there is NO ENROLLMENT FEE. Also, the first 100 people to enroll in an annual contract get one free month.
Learn more about the SRAC through its blog. You can see construction photos, get answers to questions, contact info and more.
Oh, and the winning tagline entry: “The benefits are endless…”

From the News and Observer - July 3, 2008
Statewide, 25 counties raised tax rates in their new budgets, according to a report this week by the the N.C. Association of County Commissioners. That’s the fewest increases since 1998-1999, the association said.
“It’s an election year, and nobody wants to raise taxes in an election year if they can avoid it,” said Todd McGee, the association’s communications director.
Counties tightened belts because taxpayers face rising gas prices and other economic woes, he said. The state’s taking over Medicaid payments from counties probably took some pressure off, he said. Under the Medicaid swap, the state is assuming the counties’ share of payments in exchange for some sales tax revenues.
Area county property tax rates (per $100 valuation):
ALAMANCE: 58 cents, no increase.
CHATHAM: 65.3 cents, an increase of 3.6 cents.
DURHAM: 70.81 cents after revaluation. Last year’s rate was 83.4 cents.
FRANKLIN: 82.25 cents, no increase.
GRAHAM: 60 cents, a half-cent decrease.
GRANVILLE: 75.5 cents, no increase.
HARNETT: 73.5 cents, no increase.
JOHNSTON: 78 cents, no increase.
ORANGE: 99.8 cents, an increase of 4.8 cents.
WAKE: 53.4 cents after revaluation. Last year’s rate was 67.8 cents.

Question: Can a landlord charge me more because I have a pet?
Answer: Yes. Your landlord may choose to charge you extra rent and/or a non-refundable pet fee as compensation for allowing you to keep a pet at your apartment. Your landlord may also choose to base this fee on the size and type of pet you own. And for your protection, any agreement you have with your landlord about pets in your apartment should be in writing on the rental agreement.
So if you’re relocating to Clayton, NC with pets, and you’re planning on renting an apartment or home in the area, keep this in mind.

Dear Relocate Clayton,
I’ve been looking at some condos and townhomes in Johnston County and was wondering if having an HOA would affect what I can and can’t do with my property.
Answer: Maybe. In general, laws allow you to use your property in a way that suits your lifestyle. However this freedom is not unlimited and is subject to certain restraints - including the rules set forth in a Homeowners’ Association. An HOA may be allowed to adopt bylaws and/or rules which may govern your conduct with regard to your dwelling and property. It could affect your ability to use your property in a way you desire. For example, some associations don’t allow basketball nets and backboards to be attached to and structure on any property that the Association has jurisdiction over. The examples are endless. Just be careful and red all the covenants BEFORE you purchase.

Somehow, living in Clayton NC has been taking a toll on our cars. I guess with all the back roads in Clayton and Johnston County, you’re bound to get a few dings and cracks in your windshield. Which is exactly what happened to my Toyota Corrolla - the official car of Relocate Clayton. Anyway, what turned out to be a ding turned into a crack as long as my forearm within about a week. So, needing a new windshield, I set out to make some calls and get some quotes.
I’ll save you the details of all the quotes I got from Johnston County windshield replacement companies and just tell you this…every company was at LEAST $65 More than the windshield repair and replacement company I went with:
Dash-N-Glass
www.dashnglass.com
7754 US Highway 70 W
Clayton, NC 27520
(919) 550-8222
I’ll tell you that my windshield replacement cost me $170. The next lowest quote was $235. The best part was, I never had to leave my house. The technicians were experienced, fast and courteous.

Much like a moth to the flame, I go where the coffee is. In a previous post, I mentioned that Wendy’s in Clayton, NC has a killer new cup of Foldgers that seems to have told my body that I need four cups a day to be whole. Today, as I write this in fact, I’m sitting here at The Coffee Mill in downtown Clayton, NC. I used to frequent The Coffee Mill upon first relocating to Clayton, NC because a) it had coffee and b) it had Internet access. But it never jumped into my head that should blog about this place until I’m actually sitting here IN The Coffee Mill with my laptop open and a coffee in easy reach.
House blend coffee starts at $1.30 for a small and goes up to $2.00 (excluding taxes). Get your fill of baked goods too, cause I won’t - cookies, Rice Krispy squares, scones and other treats adorn the counter.
Cappucino, latte, americano, breve, chai latte and other words that never come out of my mouth are also available between $.50 and $3.75. Some people say it’s Clayton NC’s best coffee.
