Seeking Johnston County NC Artists

If you are a resident in Johnston County NC and have an interest in exhibiting your work in the Eye of the Eagle Art Gallery during the month of October, the gallery would love to hear from you. They are seeking diversity and broken boundaries in your chosen medium.

To be considered for exhibition the following requirements must be met:

Note: The Gallery has the right to reject art work that it feels is inappropriate and does not meet the standards deemed acceptable.

Emerging artists in Johnston County with a fresh perspective are encouraged to apply. Art will be on display in the gallery during the month of the grand opening.

If you wish to consign your art to the gallery you may do so at the end of the month. If you do not wish to consign your work to the gallery, it will need to be removed by November 1, 2008 or a $10 daily storage fee will be charged.

The Clayton Historical Association Presents an Afternoon of Bill Leslie’s Music

Morganton, NC native and UNC at Chapel Hill graduate Bill Leslie, is a Tarheel through and through. Not only a talented story-teller as a WRAL-TV5 news anchor, Bill is a world-class musician, praised by Yo-Yo Ma as “one of the greats in modern Celtic Music.”

When Yo-Yo Ma talks about you, people listen.

The Clayton Historical Association is presenting an afternoon of Bill’s music, with a cultural event called “Tarheel Tales and Tunes”, to be held at The Clayton Center, (111 East 2nd Street, in downtown Clayton, NC) on June 1, 2008 at 3pm.

This special event will include selections from Bill’s recently finished album Blue Ridge Reunion – a CD and companion book project available this fall. For this project, Bill revisited his late father’s favorite mountain vistas that inspired his father’s watercolors. Bill drew musical inspiration from these same vistas for his new songs. The companion book will feature the late William Leslie’s Blue Ridge paintings, along with Bill’s narratives.

Cider House Studio Presented with Clayton, NC Facade Improvement Grant

Clayton Mayor Jody McLeod and Mayor pro tem Bob Ahlert presented Cider House Studio owners Holley Carpenter and Brandon Carpenter with a $2,000 grant check for the facade improvements made to the building at 436 E Main Street in downtown Clayton.

Raleigh, NC – Capital Bank will break ground in Clayton for the opening of its 28th branch location, marking the bank’s entry into the Johnston County market. The groundbreaking ceremony will occur on Thursday, May 1 at 10 a.m. at the site of the bank’s new location, 12701 U.S. Highway 70 West in Clayton.

“The expansion of Capital Bank into Clayton is an important milestone for the bank as we expand our banking services to customers in growing Johnston County,” said B. Grant Yarber, president and CEO of Capital Bank. “We’re proud to bring ‘Service Worth Talking About’ to another North Carolina community, our 28th branch throughout the state.”

The new branch is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008 and will staff approximately five people. Todd Warrick, senior vice president and North Wake community executive, will serve as the area executive for Clayton. Warrick joined Capital Bank last year and is currently based in the Wake Forest branch.

Johnston County School District Updates

Johnston County

REDISTRICTING MEETINGS: The Johnston County School Board will hold a hearing at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 3rd to discuss the proposed district for the new Powhatan Elementary School. The meeting take place in the cafeteria of East Clayton Elementary School. Powhatan, scheduled to open in August with about 600 pupils, is anticipated to ease crowding at East Clayton.

TRAILBLAZER: Fred Bartholomew, a Johnston County Schools board member, was honored this month as an Individual Trailblazer by the N.C. Association of School Administrators. Bartholomew retired in 1999 as principal from Princeton School, where he served for about 30 years. He also served as chairman of the Johnston County Board of Education for five years.

During his tenure as chairman, he oversaw construction of new schools, supported larger supplements for new teachers and championed mentor programs for teachers.
