So…forget it. Never again will I get ice coffee from McDonald’s in Clayton, NC. I will risk life and limb to make a left turn into Dunkin’ Donuts on US 70 if need be. McDonald’s, your coffee tastes burnt, your employees don’t speak enough English to know what ‘light and sweet’ means, and when I sip my coffee before I leave your drive-through window and ask you to make it again because it tastes like shit (yes, we use the word shit on this blog), all your employees can do is make faces of disgust at me.

So I’m breaking up with you McDonald’s of Clayton. That goes for you too, McDonald’s of Smithfield, NC (all of you), McDonald’s of Garner and every other McDonald’s south of the Mason-Dixon line.

When I relocated to Clayton, NC from Connecticut, I knew I’d be sacrificing the love of my Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee since there’s only one DD that happens to be close to me. Now I KNOW where my true ice coffee love lives.

It was one year ago today that the Relocate Clayton staff (formerly known as the Oppressed Yankee staff) packed up their stuff and relocated to Clayton, NC in Johnston County.

In fact, one year ago today (or maybe it was tomorrow) we had snow. Remember that? The staff at Relocate Clayton is no longer strangers to phrases like ‘wintry mix’ and the sensationalist news-hype that drives fear into the hearts and minds of North Carolinians.

But I digress. It has been a great year. North Carolina IS a great state and Clayton/Johnston County is THE place to be. I know people who are looking forward to moving here, but are having trouble because the real estate market is a mess in the northeast. If timing is everything, then Relocate Clayton has it. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the South is the new North.

In case you were wondering where Relocate Clayton is headquartered, we’re in the Clayton Pointe subdivision. I call it many other things though, like the Yankee Relocation Camp, Witness Protection and others. At least we have good neighbors to keep us company.

Dear Tom,

Er um, have you checked out the Clayton Parks and Rec Department? They have a ton of indoor and outdoor activities and they’re responsible for several parks in the area. They also put on youth, and some adult, sports programs. Call the Clayton, NC Parks and Recreation Department at (919) 553-1550. Tell them Relocate Clayton sent you. They’ll wonder what the heck you’re talking about.

If you want to get back to nature, try Clemmons Educational State Forest. Not only will you get to meet a real live Park Ranger, you can do some hiking and picknicing. Get some friends together (if you have friends…I don’t know Tom that well) and try some group camping. You need to make reservations for this though. You cal call (919) 553-5651 for more info.

Coincidentally, the state forest is located near the site of the former Crazy Horse. So if you could get to Crazy Horse, you can get to the state forest.

Oh, and if you golf, there are plenty of places to golf. I don’t have time to golf, but my neighbor (pronounced Nay-Bah) is a member at The Neuse. He says it rocks if you’re looking for some place that’s not pretentious as all heck. I’m not saying other places like Pine Hollow and Riverwood are pretentiuous…my Nay-Bah simply hasn’t golfed there.

In terms of teams sports, Clayton isn’t that far from the MudCats minor league baseball team. For other outdoor activities, try Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, Harris Lake, Kerr Lake, and Relocate Clayton Lake. Ok, don’t try the last one, it’s actually just some standing water I have in my yard.
